During World War II, the European Theatre was an area of heavy fighting across Europe from September 1, 1939 through May 8, 1945. Allied forces fought the Axis powers in three theatres: the Eastern Front, the Western Front and the Mediterranean Theatre. The map below indicates war zones that were established to ensure that all areas of the war were accounted for by each Allied country.
