The Medal of Honor (Navy) is the highest military decoration awarded by the U.S. government. It is bestowed on a member of the U.S. armed forces who distinguishes himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the U.S. Because of its nature, the medal is commonly awarded posthumously. Any false verbal, written or physical claim to an award or decoration authorized for wear by authorized military members or veterans is a federal felony. The following Arkansans have received the award; Douglas MacArthur, Maurice L. Britt, Lloyd L. Burke, Nathan G. Gordon and Nic Bacon.
The Distinguished Flying Cross is a medal awarded to any officer or enlisted member of the United States armed forces who distinguishes himself or herself in combat in support of operations by "heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight, subsequent to November 11, 1918." Recipients of the medal include the first recipient Commander Richard E. Byrd (for flight over the North Pole), George H. W. Bush, (with three Oak Leaf Clusters), Jimmy Doolittle (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), Curtis LeMay, John Glenn (with five Oak Leaf Clusters), George McGovern, John McCain, (with eight Oak Leaf Cluster's), and Jimmy Stewart (with Oak Leaf Cluster);civilians, Wiley Post and Amelia Earhart.
