PT Boats were used by the U.S. Navy in World War II. They were designed by a British engineer, Hubert Scott-Paine, to be lighter armed and to depend exclusively on speed for defense.

Did you know that the "PT" in PT Boats stands for plywood torpedo?

"Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it." — George Santayana

The full potential of In Their Words testimonies could not be realized without the creation of an efficient means for coming generations to search through the hundreds of hours of interviews. With the assistance of Dr. Roger Pauly, associate professor of history at the University of Central Arkansas, and Randforce Associates in Buffalo, New York, a coding system of search terms was created.

Picture of the Interactive TrunkUsers of the web site will be able to search by phase of the war (e.g. Basic Training or Embarkation), type of stories (e.g. Interaction with enemy or Interaction with officers), as well as the perspective from which the story is told (e.g. humorous or religious). Key word searches will include the names of towns and other geographical locations (e.g. Paris, France, Leyte Gulf) and battles (e.g. Battle of the Bulge, Battle of Midway).

The completed visual history web site will offer a unique historical perspective to anyone studying the Second World War. Users of the site will begin equating terms such as "Concentration Camp" with the first hand testimony provided by Arkansas World War II veterans. No longer a distant event, the war years will come alive as a meaningful chronicle of who we were and what we learned.
