"History is indeed the witness of the times, the light of truth." — Cicero
The In Their Words museum exhibit features twenty-five artifacts collected from interview participants. The artifacts, among others, include a black piece of cloth, a pocket knife, and an old newspaper. Each artifact has a corresponding video from the interviewee detailing the story behind the relic. For example, the black cloth was a blindfold used in the execution of a German spy. The pocket knife was used in a field surgery, and the newspaper was used to inform a soldier's family back home of the battles in which he had been.
Also featured in the exhibit is a twelve foot Nazi Banner removed from the balcony of Adolf Hitler's Berchtesgaden home, a "Smokin' Joe" stove used to cook in a German POW camp, and a blood-soaked Japanese Flag from the island of Iwo Jima.
With the exhibit constructed in a manner similar to the design of the World War II memorial itself, participants will experience history through stories told by men who lived them with the relics displayed as true visual aids. Walking through the exhibit will leave one feeling a deeper connection not only to the events which occurred but to the members of our World War II generation.
The AETN exhibit will be open to the public throughout the fall of 2007.
